Voices of Now (VON) is an internationally recognized, devised theater program that brings together ensembles of middle-school, high-school, and adult artists to create original plays.

These fast-paced, autobiographical, physical theater pieces explore significant social questions relevant to the artists and their communities. The program aims to create positive change by engaging in dialogue centered on the unique life experiences of the participants.

Here are some ways you can get involved with Voices of Now:

Mentor Ensemble: This is an audition-only ensemble for former and continuing VON artists. If you’ve been part of VON before, consider joining this group to continue your artistic journey.

Mead Ensemble: If you’re a student in grades 7-12, the Mead Ensemble is a weekend ensemble where you can collaborate with other young artists to create original plays.

Jefferson Ensemble: If you’re a student at Jefferson Middle School Academy, the Jefferson Ensemble offers a free after-school program where you can explore theater and storytelling.

FCPS Ensembles: Middle school students in Fairfax County can participate in free after-school programs that focus on devised theater and creativity.

Wendt Center Ensemble: This free evening ensemble is specifically for teens who are grieving the death of a loved one. It’s offered in partnership with the Wendt Center for Loss and Healing.

Community Ensemble: This year, Voices of Now is partnering with Boeing to establish an ensemble for military families living in the D.C. area. If you’re part of a military family, this could be a wonderful opportunity to share your experiences through theater.

International Ensembles: Voices of Now also collaborates with artists from other countries. For example:

In 2022, Arena Stage sent devisers/directors to Croatia, where they worked with young artists from Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Ukraine. Together, they created an original play called “Safe Keeping” 1.

In 2019, Voices of Now worked with ensembles in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, resulting in three original plays performed by the young artists 1.

In 2015, Voices of Now teaching artists traveled to Zagreb to work with youth from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, and Slovenia.

Voices of Now is about sharing stories, building connections, and creating positive change. If you’re interested, reach out to Mauricio Pita, the Community Programs Manager, at mpita@arenastage.org to learn more or get involved.
